Last week first shipment of new season’s pomegranate have arrived to Russia from Israel. The welcome was outstanding – first 10 pallets have been sold within 3 hours at prices way above our expectations.
First shipment contained pomegranate from Acco variety, with fruits weighting between 350 and 450 grams. To enhance the presentation, all fruit was packed in tre-pac liners, and to keep the fruit fresh, it was packed in protective bags. Despite early harvest, the pomegranate fruits were completely red from outside and the kernels were fully red as well.
This year all early varieties ripened at the same time, and our next shipments, loaded last week, contained both the 116 / Hershkoviz and Acco / Shani varieties. Having fruit cropped on the second week of harvest means that these shipments have majority of large fruits: from 380 to 650 grams. Larger fruits weighting up to 1 kg, so preferred in Russia, will appear only later, with Wonderful variety.
The difference between the 116 / Hershkoviz (also called 118) and Acco / Shani varieties are mostly in taste and color of kernels: the Hershkoviz group have more sour yet specific pomegranate taste and their kernels are bright red when fully ripe. The Acco/Shani varieties, on the other hand, have much sweeter taste and dark red kernels.
